Epipactis helleborine is a perennial herb in the orchid family that can grow anywhere from 9.8-35.4 in. (25-90 cm) tall.

Foliage

Leaves are alternate, clasping, dark green, 1.6-7.1 in. (4-18 cm) long, elliptic to lance shaped, and hairy. Flowering stem is green to purplish and usually short hairy.

Flowers

Flowers are 0.79-1.2 in. (2-3 cm) long, open with 3 petals the lowest petal forming a lip, and range in color from green to whitish green or green streaked to completely purple. Blooming occurs late June to August.

Fruit

Fruit are capsule that are egg-shaped to ellipsoid, green with brownish lines, up to 0.6 in. (1.5 cm) long, and generally hairy.

Ecological Threat

Epipactis helleborine prefers disturbed areas such as along foot trails and roadsides within woodlands.
