Ara ararauna is native to South America. Blue-and-yellow macaw were introduced to the United States as escaped or intentionally released pets.

Life Cycle
Adult A. ararauna plumage is vivid with blue feathers on the top of wings, torso, and halfway up the head. Lime green feathers occur on the front of the head with the remaining underbody plumage being orange. White skin is around the eyes and side of the face. Blue-and-yellow macaws are 31.7-64 oz (900-1814 g) in weight, 32-36 in. (81-91 cm) in length, and has a wingspan of 41-45 in. (104-114 cm). Blue-and-yellow macaws are long-lived species (30-35 years). Sexual maturity is reached between 3-4 years of age. Females lay 2-4 eggs per clutch with incubation lasting between 24-28 days. Hatchlings fledge the nest after 3 months. Outside of breeding season flocks of up to 25 individuals occur where birds feed at the top of forest canopies.
